Women Warriors In Ancient Roman Army

For many years, historians have denied that women ever served as soldiers in the ancient Roman Army. Now, we have this evidence from a British gravesite:

Women warriors from Amazon fought for Britain's Roman army

By Lewis Smith

THE remains of two Amazon warriors serving with the Roman army in Britain have been discovered in a cemetery that has astonished archaeologists.

Women soldiers were previously unknown in the Roman army in Britain and the find at Brougham in Cumbria will force a reappraisal of their role in 3rd-century society. The women are thought to have come from the Danube region of Eastern Europe, which was where the Ancient Greeks said the fearsome Amazon warriors could be found. The women, believed to have died sometime between AD220 and 300, were burnt on pyres upon which were placed their horses and military equipment. The remains were uncovered in the 1960s but full-scale analysis and identification has been possible only since 2000 with technological advances.

The soldiers are believed to have been part of the numerii, a Roman irregular unit, which would have been attached to a legion serving in Britain. Other finds show that their unit originated from the Danubian provinces of Noricum, Pannonia and Ilyria which now form parts of Austria, Hungary and the former Yugoslavia.

Hilary Cool, the director of Barbican Research Associates, which specializes in post- excavation archaeological analysis, said that the remains were the most intriguing aspects of a site that is changing our understanding of Roman burial rites.
“It seems highly probable that we have a unit raised in the Danubian lands and transferred to Britain,” she says in British Archaeology. “Though the numerii are generally referred to as irregular units, they are not thought of as having women among their ranks. However, the unit came from the area where the Ancient Greeks placed the origin of women warriors called Amazons. Could the numerii be even more irregular than anyone has ever dreamt?”

The cemetery at Brougham served a fort and the civilian settlement of Brocavum in the 3rd century and analysis of the remains of more than 180 people showed that everybody’s ashes were buried there. Archaeologists have been able to determine the ages and gender of the dead and to build up a detailed picture of Roman funerals in Brougham.

One of the sets of women warrior’s remains were found with the burnt remnants of animals. Bone veneer, used to decorate boxes, was also found alongside evidence of a sword scabbard and red pottery. The possessions suggest that she was of high status and her age has been estimated at between 20 and 40 years old. The other woman, thought to be between 21 and 45, was buried with a silver bowl, a sword scabbard, bone veneer and ivory.

NEW: "Pentheselia" Myth Photo-Story

"Pentheselia" added to the "Women Warriors Photo-Stories" library. Unlike the usual myth you would find in Bulfinch's, my version is multi-media: thrilling music, fantastic artworks, and the most detailed account of her battle with the Greek army at Troy. Please leave me a comment here after you read the story.

NEW: Camilla Myth Photo-Story

"Camilla" added to the "Women Warriors Photo-Stories" library. It's the Roman myth about Camilla, the warrior-queen who came to the aid of Turnus, king of the ancient Italians, who was fighting the invading Trojans who had fled the ruins of Troy. She is one of the most noble of the mythical women warriors, dying after performing heroic deeds of valor. I hope you enjoy it and I would like to read your comments.

"Last Of The Amazons" book

If you enjoy art and stories depicting women warriors and Amazons from fantasy, myth, and history, then you've got to read "Last Of The Amazons" novel by Steven Pressfield, author of the popular "Gates Of Fire" novel. "Last Of The Amazons" is a new rendition of the supposed abduction of Antiope, Queen of the Amazons, by Thesus, king of Athens, and the subsequent invasion of Greece by the Amazon army and their allies. Lots of thrilling battle scenes and plot twists. Hope it becomes a movie someday.

Women Warriors Art In Movies

If you are interested in seeing the art of women warriors from fantasy and myth portrayed in movies, here's a list I can recommend: "Thor And The Amazons", "Barbarian Queen and it's sequel BQII", "Hundra", "Red Sonja", "Naked Warriors", and "Viking Queen". "Conan The Barbarian" movies also have women warriors as strong supporting characters. All of these movies are available via Netflix or Blockbusters. There is also "Battle Of The Amazons" and although it's not available through online rentals, but I've seen copies for sale on video websites that you can Google.

"Wolfy's Howl" Blog News

I recently switched from cable Net to DSL Net so I lost my access to my previous ISP's FTP server. Therefore, as my photo-stories and short-story libraries were hosted on the FTP server, I had to delete both libraries. I hope that most of you had a chance to read these stories. Sadly, I haven't found a way to put them back on the blog.

*** BIG PROBLEM:

One of my biggest problems with art collecting is authors not signing their work. While I sometimes use unsigned art, I also would like to give the artist credit. So, if anybody thinks they know the artist of any unknown picture here, please leave me a comment on any of my posts. Thanks.

Thanks to everybody for making the blog a success.

A Gladiatrix Speaks Out:

"[Men tell women it's not ladylike to wield a sword.] Well, ever the man in men! Let a woman know her place: let her milk and spin and sew and bake and bear children, not look upon her threshold or the command of her lord and master! Bah! I spit on you all!

There is no man alive who can face me with weapons and live, and before I die, I'll prove it to the world. Women! Cows! Slaves! Whimpering, cringing serfs, crouching to blows ...

Ha! You deny me a place among men? By God, I'll live as I please and die as God wills, but if I'm not fit to be a man's comrade, at least I'll be no man's mistress."
